Since the wristwatches appeared more than a century ago, our attachment to them has not faded at all, and this is largely dictated by the comfort and convenience of wearing them on the wrist. Which, in turn, cannot be imagined without such an important "covering" element as a watch strap.
Starting with small-scale production volumes, each watch brand, along with the watch mechanisms, had to take care of the proper form and quality of watch belts for their watches - this important component of the watch image was dynamically developing and modernizing taking into account new demands from consumers. All kinds of materials, shapes and colors have not been tried by watchmakers over the years, trying to please both the technical and functional needs and the cultural and aesthetic tastes of billions of consumers. The logical result of this development is that today there are such large manufacturers of watch belts as HIRSCH, Morellato, Condor, etc., which annually supply hundreds of watch brands with hundreds of millions of watch belts. Sweat Belt Original Product And they also offer consumers no less of them for the subsequent replacement of worn-out belts with new ones - after all, many experts recommend that customers change a leather strap at least once a year. But at the same time, some of them clarify that to a greater extent this applies to straps made of calfskin, and is not so categorical for straps made of more exotic types of leather.
Throwing away the old strap and buying a new one instead is not that tricky business, but, as our everyday experience shows, sometimes quite troublesome, and sometimes very costly. Therefore, we propose to figure it out together: is there any alternative to this? Straps made of genuine leather and other most common materials will be discussed today in our next article.
And I would like to start with the thesis that timely, regular and correct maintenance can sometimes significantly extend the service life of many of our watch straps. After all, it is not unusual that our various shoes require a certain and regular care. So, why are watch straps worse? Especially when you consider that, like shoes, wristwatches are always in sight of the general public, which means that they must look perfect. Therefore, if for someone it is still not so obvious, then in our expert opinion it would still be useful to get acquainted with a selection of a set of preventive and purifying measures to increase the "survivability" of the straps.
So, here are a few simple recommendations to significantly increase the life of leather straps.
Prophylaxis is prophylaxis, but even if all the above recommendations are followed, a little by little the strap gets dirty, loses its former shine, and sometimes acquires a specific smell. So, if you wear the same watch model all the time, then it is recommended to clean the strap from dirt, dust and bacteria at least once every six months, and even a little more often in summer.
Nowadays, it is quite easy to find in watch or shoe stores specially designed cleansing wipes, oils, water-based and alcohol-based liquids, as well as deodorants, such as HELI. With these professional cleaning products, it only takes a few minutes to clean your leather strap. But we want to note that it will not be superfluous if you first check the effect of the cleaning agent on a small area of the skin on the inside of the strap.
If you do not purchase special tools, then you can use the helpers who are easy to find in your kitchen or bathroom. Just do not forget to remove the strap from the watch first, so that it is safer and more comfortable for the watch. And now, in more detail about some of the popular methods for cleaning leather straps (mostly from calfskin):
Attention! For straps made of exotic materials (skin of an ostrich, elephant, stingray, snake or lizard), experts still do not recommend using ordinary detergents or soap solution. In such cases, it is best to consult with a sales assistant and rely on a dedicated strap cleaner.
As soon as the wrist watches began to acquire more and more water-resistant construction, the question of how to replace their leather strap, which is so sensitive to the water environment, was not slow to arise on the agenda. And the optimal solution was found quite quickly, since rubber and rubber products were already in full swing in the rapidly developing automotive and aviation industries. But naturally, divers benefited most from the use of rubber for watch
