There are strict leaders. There are tough ones. But this does not mean toxicity yet. Toxicity is expressed not in severity, but in methods of exposure and communication with subordinates.
Leader toxicity is when psychological discomfort becomes the norm for the team. As a result, employees do exactly as much as is required of them and not an iota more, do not stay at work of their own free will for a minute, stop taking initiative. And many other "charms".
There are toxic leaders. And I have met many times. Sometimes they were heads of other departments who were not directly related to me, sometimes employees of other departments, and even once - my own boss, who is also the owner of the business. I noticed that there are two types of companies with toxic leaders.
The first is when certain toxic individuals meet in a normal company. Subordinates suffer, colleagues from other departments avoid unnecessary contacts, and even the bosses take into account the character of this character more than the mores of other subordinates.

Celestials, that is, the top management of the company, broadcast the same toxic principles to subordinates. At the same time, they themselves experience the fruits of first-person toxicity for themselves.
As soon as such a celestial dweller himself gets on the carpet, he has no tools against the chef's toxicity. Servants are rank-and-file employees and middle managers who bear the burden of such management methods. They are not on the same team with the celestials, but on opposite sides of the barricades.
If you have ever encountered a toxic leader, you recognize such a company from the doorway, in the literal sense - entering the office.
Ordinary employees here are quieter than water, below the grass. As a rule, they are polite, even helpful. At their level, they have normal interpersonal relationships. But as soon as the door of the chief's office opens, conversations subside, faces become serious, everyone pretends to be extremely busy and intelligent.
Even the interior of the office speaks volumes. Imperial manners are observed: a huge hall and an office for the most important leader and modest conditions for ordinary employees.
In the same office with such a manager, I even saw a frightening sign "Do not forget to turn off the phones in the reception area." In another office, in the hallway in front of the director's office, there was a water cooler, and in the director’s office there was a video camera with an overview of the hall. When the director was there, the employees stopped drinking tea, because they had to go to the cooler, and the manager saw it.
Idolatry. Somehow, the team begins to refer to the toxic leader as dad, mom, boss, boss, or just a third-person pronoun. Like "he won't be here today."
Squealing. When people management is based on fear, when leaders in their work do not turn to human values, these very values are washed out from the daily life of the team. And there is no command either. It's every man for himself here.
